Understanding the discipline in practice

Keep essential capability and obligations intact.

CUSTODIA governs what the organization must preserve while people, structures and operating methods change. This includes assets, knowledge, controls, commitments and the capability to perform critical work. A handover document alone does not establish continuity if the receiving person cannot carry the responsibility or access the evidence and authority it requires.

Use it during a leadership transition, restructuring, system replacement, supplier change or the end of external support. Identify what cannot be allowed to lapse and who will own it after the change. Test the transfer in practice: can the successor perform the work, maintain the control and respond to an exception? Treat any gap as assigned work rather than an assumption that continuity will take care of itself.

Continuity is supported by demonstrated capability and retained accountability. Essential work survives the change instead of remaining dependent on the people who left.
